the week in beauty: fergie goes dark, paris fashion week ends and katie's beyond the bob
Phew! It was such a dizzying week in fashion and beauty – what with Paris Fashion Week, celebs doing all manner of things to their hair, and La Lohan launching a self-tanner line (amidst committing other shenanigans) – that I had to do a special recap post to make sense of it all. First up, the celebrities: Fergie coloured her long extensions a more sophisticated dark brunette, befitting her new status as married woman – a big improvement on the dishwater-hued tresses of old. Katie (or should I say, Kate) Holmes, seemingly tired of her matronly bob, added long hair extensions. Now, she looks more like her real age (30), and better yet, differentiates her from looking like a clone of daughter Suri.
But shockingly, the scariest thing I saw this week wasn't Lindsay shilling her own bronzer, or the fact that she named it Sevin Nyne (after her favourite numbers); it was the makeup at the Alexander McQueen fashion show in Paris. I'm still trying to get over the nightmarish images of white-faced women with exaggerated maroon and black lips, looking like something out of a Japanese horror film. Some editors saw it as a subversive riff on the overly-surgically enhanced, but whatever your take, you've got to hand it to McQueen for creating something so frighteningly beautiful.
But the beauty standout at the Paris shows, for me, was Elie Saab (pictured here). Love the towering, pompadour hair, that looked even more immaculate from the back, with its stunning black-jewelled embellishment. The updo trend is huge for spring '09, and it looks like it's going to be big for fall, too. It felt very 40s and Dita Von Teese-inspired, with the precisely-lined, ultra-matte red lips and black winged eyeliner. It's not for everyday, to be sure, but this is my dream high-fashion, gussied-up look.
What are you thoughts on the beauty happenings this week?
