Have you ever seen Tim Gunn's Guide to Style*? It's like What Not to Wear, but times a million. It features everyone's favorite fashion guru and turns normal women into stunning versions of themselves in just one hour! (okay, the episode is an hour, obvi it takes longer than that for the transformation).
Anyway, Tim has a firm belief that every wardrobe must have a specific 10 essential items in it. This got us thinking... what are our wardrobe essentials? And then, fate intervened when we got a reader question along these exact same lines. So we have decided to make a list of our key wardrobe pieces! Most of these are basics, and that is the point! If you get quality basic clothing you can always dress them up with accessories and trendy seasonal pieces.
1. A basic white T (I like J Crew and Gap)
2. Two pairs of jeans: skinny and trouser
3. LBD (little black dress for those of you who are abbreviation-challenged.)
4. Pencil skirt
5. Occasion blouse (preferably a couple of these. this can be where you spend a little less money since it will most likely be trendy)
6. Blazer
7. Cardigan (or two...or three...)
8. Day skirt
Accessories: skinny belt, statement necklace/earrings, flat boots, black pumps, gold sandals, a ballet flat, and patterned tights
The best thing for us to remember when we are shopping for essentials is this: CLASSIC. Ask yourself, "Is this piece timeless?" If so, spend more money on it.
*This show has been discontinued for a while, which is a sad song for us. We are up in arms over it! Such a tragedy.
