making scents of the fifi award nominees
So the Fifi award nominees were announced yesterday. And no, it's not the name of some sad, but altogether amusing dog show, but the Fragrance of the Year Awards – otherwise known as the Oscars of the perfume world. The most surprising nominees? Alongside Marc Jacobs Daisy and Dolce & Gabanna The One in the women's luxe category were Mariah Carey's M and Usher's She. It makes me wonder if I'm wrong about celebrity fragrances after all – perhaps there are some out there that are actually fairly decent. (I did have a whiff of the Mariah scent a while back and found its marshmallowy-scent to be, dare I say it, kind of nice and not sickly sweet as I'd expected it to be.) But since I'm ever more interested in niche fragrances these days, this was the category I found the most interesting. On the nouveau niche list were a couple of my faves from the last year, including Bond No. 9 Andy Warhol Silver Factory, a delightful unisex scent that smells of molten metal and incense and Prada's Infusion d'Iris, a fresh yet woody scent that's not nearly as complex but immensely wearable.
Afterthoughts: Both of these will set you back a pretty penny – (the Bond No. 9 alone is more than $200) – but if you happen to land even a little vial of it, you'll be glad you did.
